Security agencies in the State have been urged to ensure strict enforcement of the Anti-open grazing law recently signed by Governor Willie Obiano.

Speaking in Awka, the Vice President of Ohaneze Ndigbo worldwide, Chief Damian Okeke Ogene said this would help achieve the objectives of the law.

Paul Ezeoke reports that the Anambra State Open Grazing of Cattle and other Livestock Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Bill 2021 was passed after third reading by the State House of Assembly, and was later signed into law by Governor Obiano.

Chief Okeke Ogene said the law is in line with the stand of Ohaneze Ndigbo against open grazing in entire Igboland and would among other things prevent the destruction of crops, farms, community ponds, settlements and properties, as well as maximize the use of land resources.

Chief Okeke Ogene observed that the law would also reduce clashes between farmers and herdsmen, as well as promote harmonious coexistence.

He urged farmers and herdsmen to comply with the provisions of the law, noting that while people of the State are known for high sense of accommodation and hospitality, such privileges should not be abused in any form or guise.

On the coming governorship election in the state, Chief Okeke-Ogene urged electorate to come out enmasse and exercise their franchise, as well as shun violence during the exercise.

Also speaking, a community leader, Dr Mike Omenugha said the anti-open grazing law is in line with international best practices that would encourage herders to key into innovations in animal husbandry that would be more beneficial to their business; as open grazing has been outdated for many decades.

Dr Omenugha, who is a former President General of Nnobi Town Union, noted that the law would also encourage farmers to embark on massive agricultural activities to achieve State’s vision on food security, encourage youths to get actively involved in agriculture, expand export capacity and scale up establishment of agro – allied industries; which would equally create more employment opportunities and reduce crime and criminality.

He applauded Governor Obiano for his political will and courage in responding to the aspirations of the people, and urged Ndi Anambra to troop out next week and vote for APGA governorship candidate, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, to further entrench good governance in the State.
